Objective:Finasteride (Proscar®, Finpecia®) is a prescription medication used to treat male pattern baldness (androgenetic alopecia) and an enlarged prostate. Finasteride is a selective 5-alpha-reductase inhibitor, which can effectively slow hair loss and inhibit hair growth in the hair follicles of men with androgenetic alopecia. It has been used for a number of years to treat androgenetic alopecia in men. However, it has been found that finasteride may have a negative effect on male pattern baldness, in addition to slowing the progression of hair loss in the scalp. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of finasteride on hair density in men with androgenetic alopecia, and to investigate the effect of finasteride on the development of the hair follicles.
Methods:A randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled clinical trial was conducted at the University of Oxford, the Department of Pharmacology, University of Oxford, and the Department of Dermatology, University of Oxford, in the period from January 2001 to January 2003. The study population was men between 18 and 55 years old with a mean age of 41 years old. The participants were randomly divided into two groups: finasteride (50 mg) and placebo (20 mg). All participants were treated with either finasteride or placebo, in addition to taking finasteride and/or placebo. The treatment was started with 0.5 mg of finasteride once daily. The patients were instructed to stop the treatment once every three months, and a hair loss measurement was taken. The hair loss was assessed by using the scalp measurement (measurement of follicular volume) and the hair growth measurements, using the photographic assessment. The hair density was measured, and finasteride was administered at doses of 1 mg/day for 6 weeks. The hair growth was assessed by using the photographic assessment of the hair growth pattern in the vertex (top of the scalp) and the anterior mid-thoracum area. After the treatment was completed, the participants were instructed to stop the treatment once every three months, and to continue the treatment as usual. The hair density was also assessed using the photographic assessment of the hair growth pattern in the vertex (top of the scalp) and the anterior mid-thoracum area. Finally, the participants were informed of the importance of the hair density measurement, and were asked to stop the treatment once every three months.
Results:In this study, the mean change in mean of scalp hair density (mean change in scalp hair density) was significantly reduced by 1.2%, and the difference was significant by 2.6%. The hair density was also significantly reduced by 1.8%, which was not statistically significant. The mean change in hair growth measurement was 0.5%, which was not statistically significant. The hair growth was also reduced by 0.5%, which was not statistically significant.
Conclusions:Finasteride is a very effective drug that decreases scalp hair density and slows the progression of hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia, as well as in the vertex. Finasteride is a very effective drug that decreases hair growth and prevents the progression of hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia.
IntroductionBackground
Finasteride (Proscar®, Propecia®, Finpecia®) is a prescription drug used to treat male pattern baldness in men. The mechanism by which finasteride inhibits hair loss is thought to involve inhibition of the 5-alpha-reductase enzyme, which results in decreased levels of dihydrotestosterone (DHT). The DHT is a derivative of testosterone, and by reducing the levels of DHT in the scalp, finasteride may prevent hair follicles from shrinking, thereby slowing down hair loss progression.
In clinical trials, finasteride has been shown to be effective in slowing hair loss in men with androgenetic alopecia, a condition which is often associated with reduced hair growth in this area. In fact, it has been observed that men who are treated with finasteride may have a lower rate of hair loss, as well as an increased risk of hair loss.
Studies in men with androgenetic alopecia have shown that finasteride (the active ingredient in Proscar®) decreases DHT levels in scalp hair follicles, decreases hair growth in the frontal area and increases hair density in the vertex (top of the scalp).
The FDA approved Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) in 1992 for the treatment of male pattern baldness, also known as androgenetic alopecia. Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) was one of the first FDA-approved drugs to treat hair loss and is currently available as a generic medication in the United States. Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) has a proven effectiveness in slowing down hair loss, and is not only used by millions of men, but also by some of the poorest women in the world.
While Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) is an effective drug for the treatment of male pattern baldness, it may also be prescribed off-label for other conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and enlarged prostate. Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) is also used for the treatment of benign prostatic hyperplasia in men, although its approved uses are more limited and are not indicated for other conditions such as benign prostatic hyperplasia. Although Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) may be prescribed off-label for this purpose, it is not indicated for treatment of BPH. As a treatment for benign prostatic hyperplasia, Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) is not an FDA-approved medication for the treatment of enlarged prostate. Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) is a prescription medication, and its generic name, finasteride 5 mg, is Finasteride 5 mg. While Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) may be prescribed off-label for BPH, a physician or pharmacist may prescribe a different medication and be able to determine the best treatment for a patient based on their medical history and condition.
Patients with androgenetic alopecia may also benefit from the development of hair loss. Although there is no evidence that Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) is superior to finasteride (5 mg) for hair loss in men, the drug has shown no evidence of a positive effect on hair loss in women. In fact, Propecia® (Finasteride 5 mg) is considered to be the first oral medication for women that is considered to be safe and effective for women with androgenetic alopecia.

Propecia contains a medicine called finasteride. This belongs to a group of medicinescalled Type II ‘5-alpha reductase inhibitors’.
Propecia is used for the treatment of male pattern hair loss (also known as androgeneticalopecia). Propecia increases hair growth on the scalp and prevents further hair loss inmen. Men with mild to moderate, but not complete hair loss, can benefit from usingPropecia.
How does the hair on your head grow?On average your hair grows about 1 centimetre (half an inch) each month. Hair growsfrom hair follicles, which are located under your skin.
A single scalp hair grows continuously for 2-4 years (growth phase) and then stopsgrowing for 2-4 months (rest phase). After this the hair falls out. In its place a newhealthy hair begins to grow, and the cycle is repeated. The hairs on your scalp arealways in different stages of this cycle so it is normal to lose scalp hair every day.
What is male pattern hair loss?
Male pattern hair loss is a common condition in which men experience thinning of thehair on the scalp, often resulting in a receding hairline and/or balding on the top of thehead. This condition is thought to be caused by a combination of genetic factors and aparticular hormone, DHT (dihydrotestosterone).
DHT causes a decrease in the growth phase and thinning of the hair (see picture). Thisleads to male pattern hair loss. These changes can start to occur in some men in their20s and become more common with age. Once hair loss has occurred over a longperiod of time, the hair may be permanently lost.

Hair grows continuously for 2-4 yearsWho is Propecia?Propecia is a type of medication called an oral tablet. It is used to treat male pattern hair loss (‘gradual thinning’ of the hair caused by androgens).
Propecia contains the active ingredient finasteride.
Finasteride is a 5-alpha reductase inhibitor. It blocks the body's ability to convert androgens into DHT, which causes the hair follicles to lose more DHT. The follicles then convert DHT back into and androgens, and androgens into and androgens, into estrogen. The conversion of androgens into DHT is the primary cause of male pattern hair loss.
The appearance of finasteride-containing products varies between men and women. In men, the appearance of finasteride-based products varies from man to man; some men only notice minor changes in the appearance of finasteride-based products in the form of a few hair changes and/or balding. Some men only notice a slight increase in hair growth after 3-6 months of use.
Propecia is not available in the US as a prescription drug. However, you must consult a physician to obtain a prescription.

What is the active ingredient in PropeciaFinasteride is an oral tablet.
Finasteride blocks the action of DHT in the body. The body is unable to block the conversion of androgens into DHT, which leads to a decrease in the androgen concentration in the scalp. This leads to the gradual loss of DHT in the scalp.
